Sew in Spring

Do you ever do something that is like an epiphany? Where you've always wondered "how do they DO that?" and then you figure it out, learn how??? Well, this bag was an epiphany for me. I could never figure out how to make bags with zipper pockets. It baffled me. And then Anna at Noodleheads released her newest pattern, the 241 Tote. And I did it! And it was so. much fun.

I chose fabrics that scream SPRING, even though it snowed here yesterday. And these fabrics do SCREAM spring... Next time I'll go more muted, more grownup pallette. I did make modifications... one front zip pocket instead of 2, and an interior zip pocket identical to the front one. Because for me, an interior zip pocket is a neccessity.

I LOVE the curves on this bag. And it was a dream to sew it, really fun and great directions.

I used home dec fabric for the main outer body of the bag so that I could get away with lightweight interfacing. And I didn't put the magnetic closure in because I forgot to buy one!

I can't wait to make another.

Laser My Eyes!

I have a little confession to make. I had EYE SURGERY on Friday. Yup. It's a pretty big deal. So big that I haven't wanted to post about it because a) didn't want to jinx it b) didn't even know how I would write about it!

But I've had a few days... been able to use the computer... been able to sew... and most importantly been able to see the beautiful faces that inhabit my house, and I'm ready to talk about it.

It was and wasn't a spur of the moment decision. The actual decision was pretty quick, but then doing the reasearch and visiting a couple of potential places to do it took a few months. The actual procedure? Like 10 minutes. I'm still shocked at how fast it was.

So before? I couldn't even see the big E on the eye chart. Now? I can read the 20/15 line. Amazing.

Easy (Peasy) Fish Tacos

At the risk of infringing on Rachael Ray's territory, I have a new recipe. It's no big deal, fish tacos in 15 minutes. But they taste guuuud and they are FAST to make. Yay for quick cooking seafood, huh?

Tilapia was on sale. Thus I felt the need to buy it. But no idea what to cook with it. Keith suggests fish tacos. Here's what a mixed up.

4 tilapia fillets cut into 1-2" chunks
1 egg, beaten
splash of milk

2/3 cup bread crumbs
1/8-1/4 cup flour
1 tsp Goya Adobo seasoning
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp dried parsley flakes
salt
pepper

1 pkg soft taco shells (flour or corn tortillas)
exotic salsa (mango or peach)
lime juice
sour cream
shredded lettuce
shredded cheese
diced avocado
hot sauce
etcetcetc condiments

Dump the fish chunks into the egg and milk mixture. Stir it around. Dump that mixture into the breadcrumb mixture. Stir it around. Heat about 1/4 cup oil in a saute pan, fry the fish at medium high until done and well browned all around. Place on warmed tortillas, top with desired condiments. Enjoy!

The Great Raisin Extraction of 2011

All day long. All day long this little babe is saying to me "way-san", and pointing to her nose.

Correction. Pointing *up* her nose. So I ask her if she put a raisin up her nose. She said yeah. But never does it occur to me to actually look up her nose. I mean, I checked that she could breathe and everything, but did I look? Nope. Keith did. After dinner. She had raisins at breakfast. And what was in that cute little nostril? Oh yes. A snot-rehydrated...RAISIN. So we (correction: Keith) performed the Great Raisin Extraction of 2011. With tweezers. It was gross. And hilarious. And very hopefully won't be repeated.

Balloon Girl Pillow

For my Blogger's Pillow Party entry this month, I initally had a really hard time figuring out what to do... I wanted something simple, something with plenty of color, but my first attempt was a little boring. That's when I decided to use the party host's suggestion of embroidery! Now, I've never embroidered before, but part of making things for this pillow party is to learn new techniques (one of my goals anyway), so I drew up a little design and perused a couple of sources (comfortstitching, sarahjanestudios) for ideas on how to stitch it up.

And here I have the completed Balloon Girl Pillow!

Techniques include... applique, peicing, and hand embroidery

I am quite happy with how the little girl turned out... she's inspired by a peice of artwork Keith's poppy gave us a few years ago.

I also was able to use some scraps of my favorite fabrics (Central Park, anyone?)

The pillow cover measures 16x16... and is removable (washable is a neccessity around here!)

I also did my first envelope enclosure... so easy!

It's for real!

It's hard for me to believe, but I've made my first few sales already!

They happened to stem from a custom order that an Etsy user contacted me about... I made two different pouches for her to choose from, and the one she didn't choose was sold immediately after... Kismet!

Another order came locally from a friend of mine... I'm so blessed to have such a supportive group of friends :)

Clutch for a Kid

One great thing about being able to sew and having a plethora of materials at hand is that I can whip up a birthday gift pretty quickly. Lili's been invited to a classmate's party this weekend, and I gave her the option to "make or buy". If you will recall, the "make or buy" decision came up at Valentines Day as well, and as with Vday I was hoping and nudging for the "buy" option, because frankly, it's less cerebral.

But my girl insisted on the "make" (again) and so we ventured downstairs to make Erin a pencil pouch just like the one I made for Lili for a recent plane trip. It's very easy, uses 3 types of fabric, and is pretty stiff due to the interfacing. We filled it up with goodies that any kid (and kid at heart) would love and wrapped it all up in a bow!

Hopefully the birthday girl will love it, as it was custom made for her :)

Fabric Giveaway (s)

I love fabric. Especially very very cheerful fabric. But I have recently discovered that I have TOO much fabric. Maybe :)

That doesn't stop me from wanting more, and there's a fabric giveaway at Sew Fabulous, in my favorite line, Central Park by Kate Spain! It's a very cheerful, perfect for spring line, and I've used it in some of my pouches over on Etsy.

I'm giving away some fabric, too! A cute little Classic Winnie the Pooh FQ bundle... Enter Here.

Sewing for Family

One of the things about sewing for fun is that I don't often sew things that people request. This is mostly selfish; I'd prefer to just sew things that I want to sew - the frivolous little things percolating in my mind.

But when my parents ask? I must oblige. First of all because my mom taught me how to sew in the first place! And because my parents are the best in the world and I like to show my appreciation somehow. We are not a big gift giving family, so when someone actually asks for something, it's a big deal.

Case in point... A not so basic pillow cover. My dad uses bolsters when he sleeps and it drives my mom nuts that they don't have (washable) covers on them. So she's enlisted my help, as the one with free time and the ability to sew round ended zippered contraptions. And I don't mind, it gives me practice and I hope they don't notice the little imperfections.

From this angle, it looks just fine:

pretty fabric, huh? Don't knock Jo-Ann's you can't beat the price or the selection!

Etsy Opening - Fabric Giveaway!

In honor of opening my own Etsy shop, I'm giving away some fabric! I've used some of these fabrics in the purse pouches and they are from the very beginnings of my stash. I particularly love the Pooh fabric; I've always been a big fan of the classic Winnie the Pooh series. The fabrics do coordinate, so they'd be great for a crib quilt or other baby project. Or really, any little thing you have in mind!

This giveaway is for three fat quarters of cotton quilting weight fabric: classic pooh on a light blue cloud background, multi colored dots on a sage green background, and green butterflies on a light orange background.

To enter... (please make sure I have a way to contact you!)

1) Leave a comment! If you are a sew-er, let me know what type of sewing machine you use and what you like and dislike about it. If you're not a sew-er... tell me why you'd like this fabric!

For extra entries... (leave a separate comment per entry)

2) Visit my Etsy shop, and tell me what your favorite item is.
3) Heart my shop on Etsy
4) Like my shop page on Facebook
5) Blog about this giveaway and send me the link

Sleeping on a Rainbow

What is it about taking pictures of ones' own sleeping kids that is so satisfying?
