Sewing again plus updates

I broke my sewing machine hemming some jeans, and so I recently went to get it fixed. It's not at 100% yet, but I couldn't wait to sew a couple of things. Lili and I made her a purple fuzzy stuffed sparkly heart, and I made a curtain valance for Mira's room. The rest of the curtain is to follow, but I just couldn't coax any more out of the machine.

Making the heart with Lili was really wonderful. I remember sewing things with my mom, downstairs at her desk, and it was so much fun. This time Lili filled the heart with stuffing and added the glitter after it was done. She loved it dearly for a couple of days and then it's fallen to the wayside for now.

The valance for Mira's room was especially important to me because I was making the big push to get her into her own room, and so we needed a more permanent window covering solution. Today was the big day, she napped in her room and is in there (in her bassinet) for bed now. We are hope hope hoping it means better sleep for all of us, but that is yet to be determined. Lili's concern was that she will hear Mira louder now that their rooms are more adjacent.

What else... took Lili bowling with friends over the weekend, and though it was her first time real bowling, she was quick to point out that she's been Wii bowling many times before. And we are really sleep deprived. Mira is still super fussy though with the reflux managed she nurses really well now. She likes constant attention and really loves to just have one on one face time. Lili is kind of overwhelming to her, but you can see that they do love each other. Mira has a hard time outside in this cold weather. She really doesn't like any wind at her face at all, but when Keith blows on her face, she loves it. Go figure. Best times are diaper changes, morning time, and baths. And just today we discover that she really does like to lie on the floor to play (ie, stare at things). She babbles a lot, and blows bubbles a lot, and just learned to laugh out loud. 3 months old... seems like a looooong time ago!

Little Builders

We live very very close to Lowes. And recently discovered that they have a program every other Saturday morning where you can come in with your kid and they will give you a little project to make. Before Christmas we made a little house (meant to be a gingerbread house, but not really made of gingerbread). The roof hinges open, which I find tremendously cool. So you can store secret treasures inside!

Yesterday, the girls and I went and Lili made a tic tac toe game box. Mira enjoyed watching all the hammering. And it was a fun, free activity that got us out of the house!

Casey just sent me this gem of a picture from this weekend.

The girl knows her Triangle Pose!

Cupcakes, Kids, Snowmen, and Snacks

... or, a weekend with G&C!!

Our friends Gina and Casey came for what has become an annual January visit to our house! We always take advantage of this time to create something special from my favorite magazine, have someone entertain our children, and catch up with our best friends.

This visit, we tackled the Chocolate Creme Cupcakes. The Cook's Country version of that famous Hostess cupcake with the curliecue on top. While we did skip the fuss of the curliecue, the rest of the cupcake was gorgeous and supremely tasty. And not even that hard. If I make them again in the future, I'll be sure to post foodie shots of the completed project. We were a little too busy scarfing them to bother with cupcake beauty shots.

We also ventured outside in the relatively warm weather to help G&C try out their new XC skis. After a few minutes of skiing, Lili declared that we must make a snowman taller than Casey. It was a group effort accomplished:

Unfortunately, "giant snowman succumbed to the warm weather overnight", as reported by Keith from his morning bike ride to work. He was jolly while he lasted!

Suess it up!

When Lili was born, our employers gave us a lovely baby gift: an anthology of Suess books. It was too big, heavy and nice for us to use with a teething baby or crazy toddler, but now that Lili is older and more responsible, we have been reading it quite a lot. She loves reading it and even though they are crazy long stories (have you really ever read the Lorax, start to end, out loud, with all those "why" questions from a 3 year old?), we read about 2 a day when she's into it. They are fun to read if you're in the right mood**, and we also have Horton Hears a Who on audio book. Dustin Hoffman reads it. It's great. You should check it out.

So yesterday, in a fit of boredom, we turned Lili into a star-belly Sneetch. She loved it. She role played with Keith later that evening. "You ask me if you can play with me". "Can I play with you?". "No. You don't have a star on your belly."

I love it.

We've also been listening to the Suessical soundtrack. So far I've only gotten to hear the first half, but I like it!

** The "right mood" being when you are not holding and trying to calm a screaming infant. Reading Suess at top speed upside down is not recommended. You'll get a headache.

Playing Dress Up

It's not big news that Lili likes to play dress up... Now she's including Mira in the game. In the mornings, Lili often likes to help me pick out clothing for Mira. It is especially fun at this stage because Mira outgrows clothing quickly, so there's always something new to pick from. Also fun is the fact that a lot of Mira's clothes are formerly Lili's and so she can "remember" wearing them when she was little.

This morning, Lili chose the yellow stuff. We have many custom printed onesies from friends in various places, and this one came from the wife of one of Keith's co-workers. Allaire has a bun in the oven herself, and you can see more of her work at her Etsy site.

Mira was very happy to model:

notes and nuggets

things are going better, for sure! the new medicine (prevacid) seems to be doing a good job, and though mira isn't napping well (except for after car rides), she is sleeping pretty well at night. she gets up on average 2x a night, and just started being able to go right back to sleep after getting up (previously, she'd be up for about 40 minutes - 1 hour after a middle of the night feeding). we also stopped swaddling her mostly because it was a pain the butt to do so especially when she wouldn't go to sleep and because she was wiggling her arms free as much as she could. turns out to be a good thing: she likes to suck on her hands! here's hoping we get another thumbsucker and we can rid ourselves of the pacifiers.

mira's awake more and because she's not in pain so much anymore, she's pretty happy, though she requires a lot of attention. she's happy to lay on the floor as long as Lili and I play around her. i'm really happy to be cloth diapering, and found my favorite system so far (after trying fuzzi bunz, g diapers, and bummis covers). I love using the Thirsties Duos covers with cotton prefold diapers inside. There's a load in the wash as I type and I guess it just feels good to be cloth diapering. Don't get me wrong, we do what makes sense for us: cloth at home and during the day, and then disposables at night. It's a good balance for us. But I don't know why, it just feels like a sense of accomplishment to be able to be cloth diapering. I digress.

Lili is starting a theater class later this month. It will be interesting to see how much of it comes home with her!

And finally, a picture of me with Mira that I really like:

A little mental clarity

So... most of the pictures on the camera right now are of Mirabel. She doesn't look a whole lot different day to day, so I'll spare you an image on this post. Mostly, I'll use this post as a diary to myself about some things that have been happening, just because I have a little mental clarity today from a decent nights' sleep.

Speaking of sleep, it's completely erratic around here. As I've written before, Mira's sleep seems to be highly effected by her level of (dis)comfort, and therefore there have been little to no naps during the day lately. Sometimes a nap in the carseat happens if we go out, but at home it's really very spotty. Her immunizations at the beginning of the week also seem to have caused her a lot of discomfort in the form of leg pain and possibly no-poops. So there was not a lot of sleep to be had day or night early this week. We are experimenting with not swaddling her anymore (last night) and she slept well that way, though she certainly tosses and turns a lot.

BUT, she's been smiling like crazy, and is so charming when she does so. She gets full body grins and loves to be tickled and shocked with a light breeze (blowing on her face). She seems bigger and older than Lili did at this age, but definitely needs a lot of attention; she doesn't like to be left alone. She does well with tummy time and can really lift and support her head well.

Lili is also demanding more attention lately; our theory is that she is trying to figure out if we still love her amidst all the needs Mira has. She sprouted recently and outgrew a lot of her pants. It was surprising to me, but now she has a semi-new wardrobe to play around with and I think she likes it.

As for me, tired tired tired. I'm working on that whole patience thing. Doesn't help that it's hard to spend time outside with such a touchy baby as Mira is...

Money Shot

Here is proof that Mira can be a happy baby:

At her 2 month checkup today, she is growing well! Bigger than I expected. We also have determined (with the doctor) that Zantac isn't cutting it for her reflux, and now she's been switched to Prevacid. TBD if it will work better for her, poor baby's been in such discomfort.

To top it all off... immunizations started today and now she's got a mega bruise on her leg from the shots and she was definitely not happy about it. All afternoon and into the evening. I really hope she gets more comfortable over the next few days... And if not, I'll just keep looking at this picture to get me through all the worry.

Family, by the numbers

It has occurred to me several times that there are a lot of interesting number coincidences in our family:

Keith's birthdate is exactly 2 weeks after mine. And my brother's birthday is exactly two weeks before mine.

Mira's birthdate is exactly 3 years and 3 months after Lilian's

Our wedding was on 9/6/3 (not exactly a coincidence, but still...)

My Uncle has the same birthday AND Chinese Zodiac sign as Mira. This means he is exactly 60 years older than Mira. Another multiple of three...

And the one that I love the most... not only are our names in alphabetical/chronological order, but they are also in numerical order:

June Keith Lilian Mirabel
JKLM
4 letters, 5 6 7

Yeah, I'm a geek for a) realizing this and b) thinking it's cool.

snow Snow SNOW

For those of you who don't know... The NE is in the midst of a multi-day snowstorm, and we are loving it! Based on the view out onto our porch, I'd say we have about 24-30 inches, most of it in the last 48 hours. It's fluffy and luxurious. Keith even made a sled path for Lili, that runs across the driveway. It's perfectly manageable for a 3 year old and she's had lots of runs down it already.
